Jack Ma, the Chinese entrepreneur, philanthropist and founder of Alibaba – China’s $400bn tech giant – said earlier this month that the trade war between the United States and China could go on for 20 years. Who knows?
We can be sure, though, that this is no ordinary trade spat and it is likely to intensify, embracing not just trade but investment, and perhaps broadening out to confrontations in areas outside economics and commerce.
This is not a propitious time for Xi Jinping’s China to become embroiled in a trade war and its reactions so far are a nuanced mixture of resistance and brittleness.
