The year-ahead economic outlook tends to invite hostages to fortune or obfuscation. It always reminds me of Alan Greenspan’s now famous quip to a politician in congressional testimony in 1987: “Senator, since I’ve become a central banker, I have learnt to mumble with great incoherence. If I seem unduly clear to you, you must have misunderstood what I said.”
