Xi Jinping is the most powerful leader since Mao Zedong. Western media proclaim him as the new dictator or emperor, holding court in China and further afield. He is certainly powerful, but we should be careful not to make another error of extrapolation. Many assumed in the past that engagement with China would turn it into a liberal state.
