Foreign firms that invest and do business abroad are no strangers to “ethics gaps” between their host and home countries. Yet for foreign firms in China, the use of forced labour and the charge of genocide in Xinjiang province, according to both the US State Department and the wording of the relevant United Nations convention, are in a different league from more traditional ethics issues. Companies may find it increasingly difficult to satisfy the governance requirements of both a Chinese government in denial of the Xinjiang allegations and their home governments and shareholders.
